Ambrose Alli University (AAU) was established by the then governor of Bendel state (now Edo state and Delta state), Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli (1979-1983) in the year 1981. The university was initially named Bendel State University and was later changed to Edo state university before it was finally named after the late governor, Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli. It is accredited by the universities governing body in the Nigeria, Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC). The current Vice Chancellor is Prof. Ignatius Onimawo.
